Van Remenar's The Fighting Kidneys

Join my team, " The Fighting Kidneys" to run/walk at the Classic 10K or the Rowley 5K in June to help in the fight to find a cure for Nephrotic Syndrome.

Tthe Fighting Kidneys have raised over $25,000 and want to keep going to find better treatments or a cure for nephrotic syndrome. Many of you know that I am Van Remenar and was diagnosed with Nephrotic Syndrome at the age of 8 years old. For those of you that are not aware of my story, please read on.

It is very important to me to bring awareness about this disease so that we can make a difference. When I was first diagnosed, I was very sick. I needed to be hospitalized multiple times, take many medications, underwent a kidney biopsy, and change of my diet to both gluten and dairy free. Even with all these interventions, it still took 18 months for me to get into remission requiring high dosed steroids and chemotherapy. Fortunately, I finally went into remission which lasted 2.5 years. However, more than ever, I realize how much more needs to be done since I had another flare 6 months ago and had to take high dose steroids for another 6 weeks. It made me feel AWFUL! It is really time we find a cure or better treatment choices. I have said this every year, but I feel that it is true and can be put no other way, even though I have go through and have gone through a lot, it is worth it to find a cure for me and others with nephrotic syndrome.

Fighting Kidneys

The Classic Weekend committee indeed welcomes all to the thrill and excitement of participation in the sport of running. Much has been written and said about the many benefits of the activity. Part of that benefit also comes from the friendly competition between individuals as they try their best to break the tape at the finish line. However not every person starts the race on equal ground - and that is where the real story begins!
